Relient K Rocks
Concert Review
Chrissy A. Balz - November 4, 2005

A little piece of Americana showed up at the 9:30 Club last Friday for its first-ever performance in the District — Relient K rocked out to a sold-out show of young teenagers and their parents in an after-school special concert with Rufio and MxPx.

Based out of Canton, Ohio, Relient K has been pleasing audiences since 1998. Bringing with them the energy live music has been missing of late, Relient K is more than just a semi-punk, semi-Christian band: They’re everything that’s right with music these days.

Values aside, they make the kind of music teenagers gather in a garage to emulate. They have no agenda, no image to keep up and no illusions of stardom; they just have fun. And that’s all the crowd wanted from them.

They made their big entrance to a familiar favorite: the theme song from Family Matters. After a few favorites like “Sadie Hawkins Dance,” “Be My Escape,” and other tracks from their July 2005 certified gold release, Mmhmm, the crowd got going and the band paid more homage to the golden age of ’90s television, performing “As Days Go By” of “Full House” fame.

The pop culture references aren’t the only thing the upbeat band is good for. The music is entertaining, the lyrics are engaging and their stage antics are amusing. All in all, an afternoon with Relient K is a pretty good one.
